AI & THE FUTURE OF WORK
Snapshot:
The fear of AI stealing our jobs is pervasive. However, David Autor, MIT Professor, offers a refreshing viewpoint. He argues that AI has the potential to level the playing field, empowering more people to make crucial decisions in the workplace.
By expanding access to knowledge and enhancing our skills, AI can tackle income inequality and bring down costs in essential sectors like healthcare and education. Most importantly, AI could transform jobs, injecting purpose and autonomy into roles that currently feel unfulfilling. This isn't about robots replacing us, but about AI working alongside us to build a better future. Read the Article
What does it mean for you?
Okay, AI is going to shake up the workplace, and that includes the way we make decisions. The catch? To avoid a future where the tech-savvy get even further ahead, everyone needs a fair shot with AI tools. This means making sure the next generation has open access to learn these skills – because the playing field definitely isn't level right now.
Second, remember, AI is a tool, not a replacement for your brain. Experience, gut feeling, and your ability to think critically – those are the superpowers that will set you apart. The sweet spot is learning to work with AI – tap into its power, but trust your own judgment too. That's how you'll make a mark in the future.
AI GADGETS & PRIVACY
Snapshot
Hold onto your hats...a surge of AI-powered gadgets are about to hit the market! These devices promise to streamline how we interact with tech, leaving clunky phones in the dust. When you tap your AI Pin to ask a question, play music, or take a photo, Humane runs your query through a series of language models to figure out what you’re asking for and how best to accomplish it. This could be a major shake-up in the industry, but don't expect perfection right away – think of it like the wild early days of flip phones and sidekicks. Read the Article
What does it mean for you?
These gadgets sound awesome, but there's a serious catch. Seamless tech means constant data collection. Could that mean gadgets overhearing every conversation? Who gets to see and use that data? Some of these devices track your location, your heartbeat...and don't even explain how it's all protected! The future might be convenient, but remember, with great convenience comes a need for serious caution.
AI & INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY

From Billie Eilish to Nicki Minaj, music heavyweights are banding together to sound the alarm about AI. They fear AI tools trained on their music threaten their creativity and livelihoods. This battle mirrors struggles faced by authors as AI learns to mimic creative styles. With outdated copyright laws, artists worry big tech will leave them holding an empty guitar case. Trust & Safety Career Roadmap
Trust & Safety Careers
Ever think about who fights the online wars while you scroll? Fake news, hate speech, harassment, privacy breaches…Everyday technology and digital platforms facilitate, amplify, accelerate, and extend violence, surveillance, harassment, mis- and disinformation, and extremism. The professionals who work to counter these harms are increasingly relied upon and fall under the heading “Trust and Safety” professionals.
Trust and Safety is a rapidly growing field
T&S work is not limited to online content. As more and more devices in our daily lives become internet-connected, or “smart,” the scope of harms and the role of T&S professionals both increase. Location trackers, smart speakers, app-controlled thermostats, video doorbells, and connected cars can all be weaponized against victims of stalking, domestic violence, state surveillance, and exploitation. (Toby Shulruff)
6 Functions of Trust & Safety Work
1. Incident Response: Moderates and investigates user reports, requests from law enforcement or other state actors, and data trends to manage crises and harmful activities.
2. Policies & Processes: Develop policies guiding response actions, aiming to prevent future harmful occurrences.
3. Research & Data: Identifies emerging risks and trends through data analysis and research for informed decision-making.
4. Internal Tools: Collaborates with engineers, product managers, or vendors, T&S professionals to create tools for reporting and detecting online harms.
5. Product Advice: Advises product teams to design features that minimize misuse and enhance safety.
6. Collaboration & Communication: serves as an in-house subject matter expert (SME), cross-team collaboration or consultation, training and education (internally or externally), and work with external partners, vendors, and other companies in the context of industry-wide efforts, as well as public policy. (Toby Shulruff)
Skills & Mindsets Needed to Stand Out
Knowledge of AI and data science is increasingly important in Trust & Safety roles. Understanding these fields helps in analyzing data trends, developing algorithms for detecting online harms, and advising on product features that ensure user safety and privacy.
Analysis, critical thinking, research, Project management, Investigation, Passion, Problem-solving, Empathy and Resiliency.
